Yucatan Peninsula Dental Project

In 2020 GDR expands its work to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. GDR’s clinic is set up near Akumal, a small sleepy town 20 miles north of Tulum. Akumal is Mayan for sea turtle, which is apropos for this stunningly beautiful and undeveloped beach location where sea turtles roam freely.

Global Dental Relief volunteers work with Mayan communities in this impoverished area, delivering dental care to thousands of children. Clinics are set up in partnership with DIF – a national social welfare program intended to help the poorest families in rural Mexico.

Volunteers stay in the small beach town of Akumal, in a beachfront location and travel a short distance to the clinic each day. When not working in the clinic, volunteers have the opportunity to snorkel, relax on the beach, visit Mayan ruins or enjoy a nearby cenote.

Mexico – Yucatan Peninsula Dental Project Itinerary/Cost +

Working in partnership with the local community, we will set up a clinic in the pueblo of Akumal, located 105 kilometers south of Cancun. Volunteers base out of Akumal Beach and work for six days in the clinic. After the clinic, participants have two days to relax on the beach, go snorkeling or diving or visit the famous ruins of nearby Tulum. Additional sightseeing options are also available.
