Volunteering Abroad with Global Dental Relief
Who volunteers? +
People of all ages and backgrounds with a love of children, spirit of adventure, and passion to make a difference in communities of need around the world.
Volunteers are the lifeblood of Global Dental Relief. They are dental professionals and non-dental professionals – attorneys, entrepreneurs, students and educators, public officials and business owners, those embarking on studies and careers, and retirees.
Do I need specific skills? +
With Global Dental Relief, you will work in 12-20 person teams of dental and general volunteers. The most important skills needed are an open mind, a sense of humor, and a willingness to be a team player and work hard. All volunteers are trained in Global Dental Relief’s model of care at the beginning of each project and supported throughout the experience.
Is there a minimum age? +
Volunteers must be 18 years of age, unless traveling with a legal guardian or adult chaperone. For children accompanied by an adult, the minimum age is 14. For families with any youth under the age of 14, we would love to have you on select clinics with a prior conversation over the phone! Call (303) 858-8857.
How far in advance do I need to register for a trip? +
Global Dental Relief’s projects often fill up in advance. Prospective volunteers are encouraged to fill out an application and submit a deposit as early as possible. Early enrollment also allows you extra time for visa processing and travel arrangements, which can save you money.
That said, last minute cancellations do occur – always feel free to contact our office to find out if there is an opening for the project you want.
Can my friends, colleagues, or relatives volunteer with me? +
Global Dental Relief volunteers come from all over the world and travel in myriad combinations. Whether you are traveling solo or with a spouse, friend, colleague, or family member, you are sure to feel a part of the Global Dental Relief community.
Project Fees & Logistics
Do I have to pay to volunteer? +
Yes. Volunteers pay a fee to Global Dental Relief that covers their in-country transportation, lodging, most meals, and any selected sightseeing. Project fees are specific to each country and vary depending upon the option you choose. For detailed information, refer to the Project Schedule page.
What does the project fee cover? +
All lodging accommodations; ground transportation, from the moment you land in country until your departure; trip management by two skilled and attentive trip leaders; most meals; and any selected sightseeing are included in your project fee. Refer to individual country pages under the “Schedule-Locations” tab for specific details.
Is my program fee tax deductible? +
GDR is a registered 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization based in the United States. This allows a portion of your project fee and airfare to be tax deductible. Depending on the option you choose, your tax adviser will be able to help you determine the appropriate percentage.
Are there scholarships available? +
Cranberry USA, a generous dental supply company, awards a yearly scholarship to pre-dental and pre-dental hygiene students who are passionate about bringing dental care to those in need. The scholarship is worth $1,000, with $750 to put towards the trip and $250 in cash. Additionally, volunteers are encouraged to research other colleges, universities, and businesses who may offer grants and scholarships in support of volunteerism. Email [email protected] for more information on the Cranberry Scholarship.
Is fundraising an option? +
Many Global Dental Relief volunteers successfully fundraise all or part of their program fee and airfare. Contact our office, and we can help you put together a fundraising or payment plan.
Can Global Dental Relief organize my international flights and visas? +
Once you register for a trip, we will be happy to put you in touch with our preferred travel agent, or help guide you through the process of purchasing an international roundtrip flight online. We will also provide you with detailed instructions on applying for a visa. All of the countries in which we work offer simple online visa applications, visas on arrival, or do not require visas of US citizens.
The Global Dental Relief Experience
How long has Global Dental Relief been around? +
Global Dental Relief has been operating volunteer dental clinics since 2001. What started as a single project in Nepal more than 20 years ago has grown to more than 25 annual projects across six countries.

Each project includes a six-day intensive dental clinic followed by an opportunity to explore the surrounding area and culture. Projects vary in length from 8 to 21 days.
Who does Global Dental Relief work with in host countries? +
In each host country, we work side-by-side with a recognized community partner, who identifies local children in need of dental care and ensures Global Dental Relief volunteers live and work in a hospitable environment.
