Scarves and Peace Babies Lighten up a Dental Clinic in Nepal

The tooth fairy brings a special reward to underprivileged youngsters in Kathmandu, Nepal. When free dental work is completed, the patients may choose from dozens of one-of-a-kind brightly colored scarves. That can be a major effort for children who rarely get to make a choice about something new – and they love it!

The gift of scarves comes from Knitting4Peace, a group of generous knitters based in Colorado, USA.

Arriving to provide dental care in Cambodia

Leaving Denver it is 7 degrees – -bitter cold and dark. Arriving in Cambodia, the heat is dense and the drive from the airport passes palm trees, and barefoot children playing in dusty yards.

Cambodia is another world. This graceful country of 15 million people has survived a devastating past and, thirty years later Cambodia isreestablishing schools, rebuilding infrastructure, and reclaiming a rich cultural heritage.

Clinic Day 1 — Fully Operational

Daybreak shows silhouetted palm trees and a cool, clear morning. At 7:15 we head to clinic – we start early in Cambodia to beat the heat of the day. After a 20 minute drive we are deep in the countryside, passing ox carts and swarms of children biking to school.

ur team of six dentists, one dental assistant and 13 non-dental volunteers are from five US states, Canada and Malaysia.

Clinic Out of A Box

Today is set up day for our Mobile Dental Clinic. We start with an empty but clean room – here in Nepal this is a school classroom.

We open the storage room – this room contains 10 portable dental units, 2 large air compressors, hundreds of dental instruments, portable dental chairs, toothbrushes, gauze, gloves and all the myriad items needed to put on a full scale dental camp.
