JOB DESCRIPTION – VOLUNTEER DENTAL ASSISTANT
...dentists to adapt to the challenges of field conditions and deliver effective care to each child.
Dental assistants carry out normal chair side duties including patient management, instrument and suction support, and charting. When needed, assistants will work with local translators to make sure children understand procedures and dental instructions. Dental camps can accept up to five dental assistants per camp.
Field clinics are held at school, orphanage, or village locations and serve populations of children adopted for long-term care. Each child receives complete care - cleanings, restorations and extractions. They also receive individual and group tooth brushing and oral hygiene education to increase awareness and care.
In field situations, equipment and care is necessarily basic. Assistants work with portable dental units, using portable dental chairs to hold patients. Workdays run from 8 to 9 hours.
Work is demanding due to field conditions and the many patients in need of care. Clinics are also deeply rewarding due to the wonderful children and the rich exposure and interaction within a new and different culture.
