Dr. Tom Grams, our wonderful long time volunteer, died in Afghanistan in early August 2010. Tom was volunteering with the International Assistance Mission, bringing dental care to the people of the Parun Valley in Nuristan Province about 160 miles north of Kabul.
We at Global Dental Relief are devastated by the loss of Dr. Tom Grams, a wonderful humanitarian and our volunteer dental director. Tom began his work with Global Dental Relief in 2001. He went on to serve as the intake doctor on every Nepal and India camp for many years -- and brought his terrific smile and dedication to every child he treated.
In total, Tom served as the dental director on 28 Global Dental Relief dental camps, bringing care to over 24,000 children. He leaves a strong legacy in the lives of the children he touched and in the highly effective dental systems he developed to deliver care in field conditions. Tom’s life was rich and full and deeply significant.
Working with Tom's family, we have established the Dr. Tom Grams Memorial Fund, dedicated to continuing Tom's life work. The fund will provide first time dental care to the children he served in Nepal and India.
